Reference Search

This option searches for scripture references entered in the search box. You can enter one or more references. References can be copied and pasted from other applications. Standard reference formats are required. For example, try entering Mosiah 3: 19-21 or Luke 2: 1-7, 13-14, 19 or Micah 5: 1-2; John 7: 41-44; Alma 7: 10 and then select the Reference Search tab.

Using Reference Search
You can also access Reference Search by entering references in the search box that appears at the top of each page. Reference Search is always available in any search box. There is no need to select any search option.
You can enter more than one reference at a time; simply separate the references by a semicolon ( ; ). If you use the larger search box on this page, you can separate references by pressing the Enter or Return key (which will place each reference on a separate line) or by inserting a semicolon.
References can be copied and pasted from other applications, such as a word processor. This is a good way to enter a list of multiple references that have been listed on separate lines or separated by a semicolon.
You can search for chapter summaries by entering only the book name and chapter number. For example, try Mark 3 or Alma 32 .
Options
Two additional search options are associated with Reference Search and can be accessed by searching for scripture references.

Footnote Search
This option searches for the footnotes associated with a scripture verse or a range of verses. To initiate footnote searching, click on any footnoted word in the scripture text, or enter references in the search box. Try entering Gen. 2: 9 or 2 Nephi 31: 19-21 and then (1) clicking Search and (2) clicking Show Footnotes on the bottom of the search results page.

Cross-Reference Search
This option searches for all cross-references in the footnotes and study helps that point “toward” a given scripture verse or range of verses. In contrast, because of space limitations, the references in the footnotes of the printed editions of the scriptures point only “outward” to a few selected references and Topical Guide entries. It would take days to manually find all the references pointing “toward” even one verse, let alone all the tens of thousands of verses in the scriptures. To initiate a cross-reference search, click any footnoted word in the scripture text and then click the Show Cross-References button, or enter references in the search box. Try entering Gen. 1: 1; Matthew 17: 1 or Mosiah 3: 19 and then (1) clicking Search and (2) clicking Show Cross-References on the bottom of the search results page. This search option is also available for any range of verses entered into the search box. Try, for example, Malachi 4: 1-6 or Luke 2: 1-7, 13-14, 19.
